Hi this is Wesley Fryer and this is a voice mark to read the historical sign that is just south of Harrington Kansas for a monument to father Juan De Padilla who is part of the Coronado expedition the sign reads: in 1540 for the Franciscan de Vazquez Coronado marched north from Mexico with 300 Spaniards in search for the seven cities of Cibola a which there was several priests including Juan de Padilla a Franciscan Friar when the golden cities prove to only be Adobe Pueblos Spaniards went on to explore the Southwest and Padilla was among them to discover the Grand Canyon later he marched with a party of thirty picked horsemen to the land of Quivira in Kansas. for 25 days in the summer of 1541 Coronado remained at the grass hut villages of the Quivirian Indians then returned to New Mexico. Padilla went with him but the following year came back as a missionary year he was later killed by the Indians the first Christian martyr in what is now the United States although the exact place of the death is unknown and there is a monument to Padilla in the city part of Harrington elected by the Kansas historical Society on state Highway commission and this historical marker again is located south of Kansas on US 77 "
